And in order to make even more and quicker money, in the summer of 1969 Warhol moved yet further into the pornographic film business by mounting a season of hardcore gay porno movies at a Manhattan cinema he rented for the purpose. Warhol virtually gave up painting between 1969 and 1971, telling Emile de Antonio that ‘The critics are the real artists; the dealers are the real artists too. I don’t paint any more. ’ Instead he increased his other activities, in the autumn of 1969 founding an underground movie magazine, Andy Warhol’s Interview, and also producing his most commercially successful film, Trash.

At the time, increasing affluence was taking the social narcissism and moral turpitude of wealthy New Yorkers to new lows, and Warhol was in the vanguard of that hedonistic, mindless sensibility. The artist frequented the ‘in-crowd’ discotheque, Studio 54; he cultivated contacts in the pop music world such as Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and John Lennon; he hung around the White House and hobnobbed with doomed kings and dictators, such as the Shah of Iran and President Marcos of the Phillipines; and money became more and more of a creative incentive to him as his lavish international lifestyle demanded constant refuelling – as he stated in his book The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, published in 1975: Business art is the step that comes af ter Art.

Machines have fewer problems. ’ To achieve this machine-like end, after 1963 Warhol began to feign an almost robotic emotional and intellectual vacancy that was far removed from the sometimes overwrought and thinking persona he revealed to his friends in private. His machine-like stance was certainly very effective in increasing media interest in him, for the more non-committal he appeared, the more intriguing he became. This was noted by Henry Geldzahler, an assistant curator of twentieth-century American art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art who had been introduced to Warhol by Ivan Karp.
