8 n. 2. n 20 Thucydides and Herodotus historians spent most of their time in travel, examining monuments, and talking to hundreds of informants*. Some of what Stroud says here about travel and informants I can only applaud. It seems to me, for instance, a better picture of Herodotus' methods than that offered by Detlev Fehling. But I do not feel quite as confident as Stroud about how exactly the three named historians spent 'most of their time'; and though I agree that Polybius travelled, examined monuments, talked to informants, I am unhappy about lumping him in like this with the two fifth-century historians.

N 24 Thucydtdes and Herodotus 71 must have included Corinthians'. As Annex A to the present Introduction, I reprint, with purely typographic corrections, my 1992 article, which is Stroud's target here. The article was called 'Thucydtdes' use of Herodotus' and was devoted to the issue of factual dependence by Thucydides on Herodotus. In the first part I argued that there is a certain amount in Thucydides generally which presupposes Herodotus. In the second part I put a more ambitious challenge, which had to with Thucydides* speeches.

That is all I think wc can get from Thucydides* general methodological remarks, and from his remarks on his predecessors; and since he does not name Herodotus, we must now turn to those particular Thucydidean texts which have been thought to show dependence. I stress that the case for dependence is cumulative, as I have already indicated when discussing Stroud. That is, it is not enough to object to (for instance) my line about the 20 Corinthian ships, you must take on my thesis as a whole. Hence the extended list, covering all of Thucydides, which I have given as Annex B.
